Sacramento County Coroner’s deputies today identified the child killed by a hit-and-run driver outside Smythe Academy charter school as 4-year-old Jonathan Vasquez.

The father of Jonathan Vasquez, who was killed by a hit-and-run driver while riding his scooter to school Monday in North Sacramento, said his family is mourning and trying to make funeral arrangements. Jonathan Vasquez, 4, died at UC Davis Medical Center after he was hit near Smythe Academy charter school on Northgate Boulevard.
Child’s hit-run death in North Sac spurs school safety warnings
Safety advocates sounded a grim reminder to drivers and walkers after Monday’s hit-and-run death of a 4-year-old boy outside a North Sacramento school: Drivers need to be extra cautious in school zones, and walkers need to hold on to little ones when crossing a driveway or parking lot. The boy was struck about 8:20 a.m. as he rode a scooter to the preschool at Smythe Academy on Northgate Boulevard while his grandmother and 7-year-old brother trailed behind on foot, said Sacramento police spokesman Officer Konrad von Schoech.
