Former UCLA coach Wooden buried in Los Angeles

Former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, who led the Bruins to 10 NCAA championships and died on June 4, has been buried in Los Angeles. UCLA athletics spokesman Marc Dellins confirmed that Wooden was laid to rest Friday afternoon after a private ceremony for family and invited guests at Forest Lawn’s Old North Church in the Hollywood Hills A public memorial for Wooden is scheduled for June 26 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.

Actor Olmos plans tribute to famed math teacher

Actor Edward James Olmos is helping organize an East Los Angeles school tribute to Jaime Escalante – the famed math teacher he portrayed in the 1988 movie “Stand and Deliver.” A wake will be held next Friday in Escalante’s former classroom at Garfield High School. Olmos tells the Los Angeles Times that the room will be redecorated so it appears the way it was when Escalante taught there in the 1980s. Also, a public memorial service will be held next Saturday at East Los Angeles College
