From a bad break, then another to some good ones, it’s been some whirlwind winter and spring for Jimmy Laughrea. The Rocklin High School senior-to-be quarterback who broke his non-throwing arm in the playoffs last fall, then broke it again months later, has given a verbal commitment to play on scholarship at national power Boise State. He made the decision official after a visit with the Broncos coaching staff, including head coach Chris Petersen, the former Yuba City, Sacramento City College and UC Davis star.

Sam Kuykendall and Cody Kent combined for a five-hitter and Blake Parks and Zak Morgan had RBI singles to lead Yuba City to an emotional 4-1 win over Benicia in today’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division III baseball championship game at Sacramento City College. It was the fourth consecutive D-III section title for the Honkers (29-2), the third straight over the Panthers (20-9).

Valley Christian star Ryan Cordell, who shared Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic Conference co-MVP honors with Dragmire, allowed only four hits but was betrayed by poor defense.

Yuba City beats Rio Americano in D-III baseball; seek section four-peat

Yuba City beat Rio Americano 11-2 tonight in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division III semifinal to advance to the finals Monday at Sacramento City College where the Honkers seek their fourth consecutive section championship in a last hurrah push for the Stassi family. Coach Jim Stassi, The Bee’s Player of the Year from Yuba City in 1978, has featured his slugging and/or pitching sons for each of his section titles. He now has senior Jake Stassi, who improved to 9-1 with the win over Rio with six strikeouts
